Route of the Week - Chestnut Hill West Line

December 9, 2019

This week, we're taking a look at the Chestnut Hill West Line. This Regional Rail Line bounces back and froth between Chestnut Hill and Center City every weekday 50 times a day, from about 6a to about 12:20a. In that time, it serves 5,344 people for a total of over 700 miles.

This line originated 135 years ago in 1884 by Philadelphia, Germantown and Chestnut Hill Railroad. 100 years after it was built, in 1984, SEPTA took over operation of the line, naming it the R8.

The town of Chestnut Hill is the perfect place to visit during the holiday season. Head to Germantown Avenue 12/11 or 12/18 to check out Chestnut Hill's Stag and Doe Nights, where you can do your gift shopping, ride in horse drawn carriages, listen to carolers, and so much more.

You can also take the train this Saturday to check out Chestnut Hill's annual Holiday Parade. This will be the 8th year that this parade has taken place, which will end at Market at the Fareway with musical performances around its outdoor fireplace. There will be treats, and Santa will pose for photos with the children.
