Over the years, the rectangular section of Center City between 11th & Broad Streets, and Market & Spruce Streets has been divvied up and called different things by developers and realtors. But the current appellation - Midtown Village - serves it well: It resides in the dead-center middle of Center City, between the history-heavy mainstays of Old City and Independence National Historical Park, and the upscale cosmopolitan majesty of Rittenhouse Square.
As part of the larger umbrella known as Washington Square West, Midtown Village also contains the LGBTQ-centric Gayborhood, with its restaurants, galleries and hot spots; the popular dining destinations of the famed 13th Street corridor; and some of the biggest and best hotels and theaters in the city. The term “Gayborhood” was first used to describe OutFest by the City Paper, when David Warner described it as a “beautiful day in the gayborhood.” Philly Pride immediately began to use to the term the following year to describe the area of our gay pride parade formation. It has now become a universally recognized term.

There are a wide array of dinner options in Manayunk, like The Goat's Beard, which offers many locally-sourced products and the Manayunk Brewery, always offering fresh flavors and a stunning view of the river and Towpath.
Speaking of Towpath, if walking, strolling, hiking, and even horse-riding is your choice of pastime, explore this walk by the river, or go a little farther and wander through the gorgeous, wild Wissahickon, where there are over 57 miles of luscious trails to take in, steps away from downtown Philadelphia.
Manayunk also has a vibrant business community. Book lovers head over to The Spiral Bookcase for the next story to occupy your commute. Music lovers can peruse new and old records at Main Street Music (and sometimes catch a show!). There's all of this and so much more in the 'Yunk; you'll never run out of places to go.
On the list of Philadelphia’s quirkily named geographic landmarks, Manayunk is right up there. Its name roughly means “the place we go to drink” in the Unami language spoken by the Lenape who are the original people of this region. While the Schuylkill River helped shape Manayunk’s identity, so do the hills. Yet despite its famous inclines, or maybe because of them, what was once one of the city’s hottest industrial centers is now one of its hottest neighborhoods, with plenty of places where people can go to drink.
The combo of singles, young families, and life-long residents whose families have lived here for generations infuses Manayunk’s blue-collar origins with a modern edge. Row homes that once housed millworkers during the community’s late 19th- and early 20th-century industrial boom are now a hot commodity and as in demand as the trendy loft apartments and stately Victorian houses that dot the community. And bikers from around the world used to travel here to take on the legendary “Manayunk Wall,” a section of Levering Street that has defeated some of the world’s best cyclists with its 17% incline.
The heart and soul of the community is Main Street, a mercifully level thoroughfare bustling with dozens of restaurants, owner-operated boutiques, bars, and galleries. Daytime activities give way to nighttime action as foodies and revelers hit the streets, scoping out new menu additions at restaurants, jockeying for views at the riverside clubs, catching up-and-coming local musicians or dancing to a DJ.

Mt. Airy was incorporated into the city of Philadelphia in 1854. And like many other neighborhoods, it has held on to its separate sense of identity ever since. Unlike Germantown (with its connections to Colonial and Revolutionary history, for instance) or Chestnut Hill (with its history as a railroad suburb), Mt. Airy has a separate sense of history for different reasons, namely for all hard work that has gone to make it a diverse and integrated community that it is today.
Mt. Airy’s main thoroughfare is Germantown Avenue, which SEPTA's Route 23 runs up and down. Often referred to as just “The Avenue”, Germantown Avenue is the hub of the community and commercial activity in the neighborhood.

There’s no shortage of cool things to do in Fishtown, which has emerged as Philly’s truest harbor of artistic, culinary and musical action.
Great new bars, restaurants, music venues, studios and galleries, sets Fishtown apart as one of Philadelphia’s most exciting neighborhoods.
Whether its eating, drinking, seeing a show, or just enjoying the outdoors, there are countless things to see and do in Fishtown. Some the most popular destinations include La Colombe’s flagship café, Pizzeria Beddia, Johnny Brenda’s, and Penn Treaty Park.
Since Philly-based La Colombe is now in nearby cities like New York City and Washington, D.C., it’s likely you’ve heard of the coffee purveyor. But there is no other La Colombe like the company's HQ. The massive space (even in city standards) not only serves the brewer's signature drips, lattes on draft and tasty sandwiches, it also has a distillery that produces top-notch rum, which can be enjoyed in the café, along with wine and beer.
Philly Style Bagels is a small shop with a big reputation—word of advice? Get here early. The bagels quickly sell out, and the classic lox sandwich was named one of the five “Best New Sandwiches in America” by Bon Appètit magazine. But if lox isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other tasty options. Order a few to go and enjoy them at Palmer Park, located just outside.
Although Fishtown isn’t necessarily known as a retail hub, new shops have joined mainstays creating a small shopping district worth visiting. Vintage and second-hand boutiques dominate the area, with places like Two Percent to Glory mixing it up with a curated collection of found objects, jewelry, furniture and original designs, all with a Midwest feel. Jinxed has a more masculine vibe and carries a variety of rugs, art and a small collection of vintage clothing. Urban Exchange is the new kid in town, offering secondhand name brands like Gucci, Chanel and Prada. Minnow Lane sells natural and organic products for infants and parents.
As the first pizza museum in the country, Pizza Brain is a fun place to grab a slice and explore. The walls are lined with pizza-themed memorabilia and fun facts, but the pie is where they really shine. Order the Forbes Waggensense with fontina, fresh basil and smoked pepperoni and then pop in next door for a scoop of hand-made ice cream (plus non-dairy options) at Little Baby's Ice Cream.
If it’s a nice day out, walk off lunch at Penn Treaty Park. This small green space lines the Delaware River, offering great views and a tranquil atmosphere to relax mid-day.
At first glance, Bottle Bar East looks like a grab-and-go beer store. But once inside, you’ll discover a two-story space complete with a full bar and dining area. Go here for a drink pre-dinner (happy hour is Monday-Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm) and order from the long list of brews, plus rotating specialty cocktails, wine and appetizers.
The Fishtown section of Philadelphia, named for its history as a commercial fishing hub, is located north of Girard along the Delaware River. In recent years, Fishtown has seen an influx of bars, restaurants, music venues, studios, and galleries as a result of Philly’s young creative class moving in. These newcomers’ integration and collaboration with the neighborhood’s long-time residents and families has given Fishtown a one-of-a-kind flare.

The National Museum of American Jewish History, on Independence Mall in Philadelphia, presents educational programs and experiences that preserve, explore, and celebrate the history of Jews in America. Its purpose is to connect Jews more closely to their heritage and to inspire in people of all backgrounds a greater appreciation for the diversity of the American Jewish experience and the freedoms to which Americans aspire.
Established in 1976, and situated on Philadelphia's Independence Mall, the National Museum of American Jewish History is the only museum in the nation dedicated exclusively to exploring and interpreting the American Jewish experience. NMAJH was originally founded by the members of historic Congregation Mikveh Israel, which was established in 1740 and known as the "Synagogue of the American Revolution".
The Museum has long been a vital component in the cultural life of Philadelphia. During the course of its history, NMAJH has attracted a broad regional audience to its public programs, while exploring American Jewish identity through lectures, panel discussions, authors' talks, films, children's activities, theater, and music.
The Museum has displayed more than a hundred exhibitions in its first three decades-plus of existence. As the repository of the largest collection of Jewish Americana in the world, with more than 30,000 objects, NMAJH has developed extensive institutional experience in preservation, conservation and collections management supporting the fulfillment of its mission to preserve the material culture of American Jews.
NMAJH is proud to be a Smithsonian Affiliate. The Museum has access to the Smithsonian Institution's collections and resources, permitting it to borrow artifacts from the Smithsonian’s estimated 142-million-piece collection – from colonial Judaic artifacts and historic documents to fine art and objects of contemporary significance – to be shown as part of special exhibitions or to be incorporated into our core exhibition. This affiliation also allows the Museum to take advantage of the Smithsonian’s educational resources and expertise in the areas of conservation, collections care and exhibit development for both staff training and consultation. The National Museum of American Jewish History is able to call upon Smithsonian experts to present programs on behalf of the Museum, as has already been done with great success. Members have the opportunity to become Smithsonian Affiliate members at a minimal additional cost.

Penn men's and women's basketball games, volleyball and wrestling matches are played at the historic Palestra, the most storied gymnasium in the history of collegiate athletics.
The Palestra has hosted more games and more visiting teams than any other facility.
The Palestra, often called the Cathedral of College Basketball, is a historic arena and the home gym of the University of Pennsylvania Quakers men's and women's basketball teams, volleyball teams, wrestling team, and Philadelphia Big 5 basketball. Located on the University of Pennsylvania campus, The Palestra was given its name by Greek professor Dr. William N. Bates, who felt the name logical because in ancient Greece, young men would compete in a variety of events in a rectangular enclosure attached to the gymnasium to the view of all who would come -- a Palestra. The name was widely accepted by the organizing committee for it fit the specifications: authenticity, dignity, descriptive, and novel. So, in 1927, The Palestra was opened.
